Franck Kessie will transfer from Milan to Barcelona in the summer as a free agent.

It is widely accepted that a deal to take the Ivory Coast international from San Siro to Camp Nou has been struck, with the 25-year-old expected to become the successor to Sergio Busquets in the heart of the Barca midfield.

Kessie has spent the duration of his professional career in Italy, turning out initially for Atalanta before moving to Milan in 2019.

His signing for Barcelona is seen as a major coup for the Spanish outfit, who have been gaining momentum on the field under Xavi in recent weeks and already appear to be increasing in power before the 2022/23 campaign.

Kessie’s Barcelona salary

One of the attractions of Kessie is that he is a free agent, meaning that there is no significant transfer fee for Barcelona to shell out on.

In such cases, this often means that the player receives a large signing on bonus. Erling Haaland, for example, is set to receive a huge one-off payment when he leaves Borussia Dortmund in the summer in a cut-price deal that will be triggered by a release clause.

According to Sport, though, Kessie will not take a signing bonus from Barcelona. Instead, this is set to be built into his wage.

This is another example of the clever accountancy that Barca are using to get through this delicate financial period. Although they may end up paying the midfielder the same total financial package overall, by breaking it down over multiple years, it reduces the immediate effect and allows them greater flexibility to strengthen their squad elsewhere.

It is reported that Kessie will draw a wage of €6.5 million net per year, which is a figure inflated by his lack of signing bonus.

Barcelona, meanwhile, are still pursuing other free agents, such as Cesar Azpilicueta of Chelsea and Noussair Mazraoui of Ajax.
