The legendary right wing-back is now 38 but he has become the first signing made by new Barcelona coach Xavi.

According to Sport, Dani Alves will be paid only €1 a month to play for the Blaugrana.

Barcelona’s financial problems

Barcelona have been suffering from a much-publicised financial crisis and are estimated to be around €1.4 billion in debt.

This has made it very difficult for them to register new signings, with Lionel Messi unable to sign a fresh contract and this subsequently leaving to join PSG on a Bosman this summer.

Barca’s only transfer business ahead of the 2021-22 campaign were free transfers such as Memphis Depay, Eric Garcia and Sergio Aguero, players who were also registered with great difficulty.

Such was Dani Alves’ desire to return to Barcelona, he agreed to a salary that would not create a legal or financial problem.

Dani Alves can't officially play for Barcelona until he is registered as a new signing in the January transfer window.

However, he has already begun training with the first team since Monday.

Dani Alves made 391 appearances in all competitions during his first spell at the club between 2008 and 2016, scoring 21 goals and winning every major club honour in the game.

The right back won six La Liga title and three Champions Leagues among the plethora of trophies before leaving to join Juventus in 2016.

Barca are currently struggling in mid table and risk not even qualifying for next season’s Champions League.
