The German club will need to rebuild their midfield as Kevin Kampl has retired and Xaver Schlager will leave on a free transfer this summer.

Engels is one of a handful of options being considered by Leipzig, along with Rocco Reitz of Borussia Monchengladbach, Caspar Jander of Southampton, and Kennet Eichhorn of Hertha BSC.

Belgium international Engels has 15 goals and 20 assists for the Scottish giants in 90 appearances across all competitions. He joined the club for €13 million from Augsburg in 2024 and has become an important player due to his contributions in the centre of the park.

Celtic may need to fight to keep Engels

RB Leipzig will be active in the midfielder market this summer after the departures of Kampl and Schlager, especially if they qualify for the Champions League and raise funds by selling wonderkid winger Yan Diomande.

Plus, Brajan Gruda, on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion, is also set to depart after the season. He has scored a goal and provided an assist in four Bundesliga appearances, and his profile is more similar to Engels’ than Kampl or Schalger.

This is not the first time that a club from the top five leagues will attempt to sign Engels.

Late in the winter transfer window, Nottingham Forest tried to sign the Belgian, with Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg stating that a departure was possible “under the right conditions.”

Engels was viewed as an alternative to Douglas Luiz, who saw his loan cut short after failing to maek an impact amid a tumultuous season at the City Ground.

Celtic held onto the 22-year-old, who has four goals and two assists in the Premiership this season.

The player has a contract until 2028, but a strong offer in the summer, when there will be more time to find a replacement, may prove too much to pass up.
