The summer transfer window is in full swing, and clubs across European football can sign unattached players to bolster their squads ahead of the 2026-27 season.
Contracts in Europe typically run until the end of June, and numerous high-profile players joined the list of already unemployed stars when that date passed.
In the Premier League, Tottenham Hotspur swooped for proven quality by signing Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi from Liverpool and Bournemouth respectively.
The Reds also lost legendary forward Mohamed Salah after he completed a shock transfer to Trabzonspor, while Ibrahima Konate moved to Real Madrid on a Bosman.
Konate was joined at Los Blancos by Manchester City icon Bernardo Silva after he brought an end to his nine-year spell at the Etihad Stadium.
Another player who left City upon the expiration of his contract was John Stones, who joined Serie A giants Inter Milan on a free transfer.
Meanwhile in Spain, Poland star Robert Lewandowski moved to Major League Soccer (MLS) side Chicago Fire after leaving Barcelona.
Lewandowski was joined in the United States by Antoine Griezmann, who switched to Orlando City after Atletico Madrid agreed to release him from his contract a year early.
