Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag bemoaned his side’s display at St James’ Park after they lost 2-0 to Newcastle.

Goals from Joe Willock and Callum Wilson secured three points for the Red Devils, who looked flat throughout.

The game was highly anticipated owing to the fact that both sides are tussling for the top four - but it was the Magpies who ended up earning all three points on Sunday.

The seamless win means that Eddie Howe’s side jump to third spot in the Premier League table, level on points with Ten Hag’s men but with a better goal difference.

After the match, Ten Hag opened up about how the opposition played better and wanted the game more.

The Dutchman said: They wanted to win more than we did. I hate to say it but they [Newcastle] were better today, especially in determination, passion and desire. It hurts me to say that the other team had more passion and desire.”

“I think our attacking game was not good enough. I don’t want to focus on one person, it was about the team performance. It wasn’t good enough. In a season you get set backs and we have to deal with it. I believe in my team. I believe we will bounce back.”

Indeed, the Red Devils looked less than their best selves, with the Magpies controlling the proceedings and coming away with a well-deserved win.

Need for a No.9

Some attention turned to Wout Weghorst during the game - with focus on his lack of input in front of goal. The attacker looked legless throughout and his lack of mobility was clear to see.

The striker arrived on loan from Burnley in the winter window and he’s struggled to find his feet at the Premier League side.

The lack of a proper No.9 would not have helped Man Utd in their match against Newcastle.
