Manchester United may have spent lavishly this summer, but manager Erik ten Hag wants to continue renovating his squad with three new January signings, according to reports.

During the summer transfer window, Antony of Ajax and Real Madrid’s Casemiro were the highlights of six new arrivals at the club, but the Old Trafford side did miss out on key targets.

Ten Hag will address those areas in January after making a positive start to life in the dugout at Man Utd.

Fans will be surprised to learn the three areas of the squad that he is primarily targeting.

Right-back

The performances of Diogo Dalot may have pleased Ten Hag – and offered him a pleasant surprise in an area of the field where he thought Man Utd were weak – but he still wants an additional player in that role. Aaron Wan-Bissaka is not thought to be able to play in the style he wishes and could be sold in January if an appropriate offer arrives.

Central midfield

After missing out on Frenkie de Jong in the summer following a long transfer saga, there is the prospect of Man Utd adding another midfielder to their squad. Scott McTominay has impressed having been given the opportunity to start alongside Christian Eriksen, but Youri Tielemans is now linked with the position. Out of contract at the end of the season, the Belgium international could be available relatively cheaply, although competition may come from the likes of Arsenal and Newcastle.

Of course, it would also be surprising if United did not revisit the De Jong situation, although given his prominent role for Barcelona, they are unlikely to get very far in this case.

Centre forward

Cristiano Ronaldo is unlikely to ever be truly happy at Man Utd with Ten Hag having pushed him to the bench, so the veteran is liable to leave sooner or later. The manager still wants a No.9 as an alternative option in his squad, with Ajax striker Brian Brobbey a name he continues to be linked with.
