Barcelona President Joan Laporta has confirmed that the club are close to activating their third economic lever and that will allow them to register new players.

This was confirmed when the club were presenting new signing Jules Kounde to the media having completed a deal for him last week with Sevilla.

The lever was required in order for the club to be able to register its five new signings: Kounde, Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha, Franck Kessie and Andreas Christensen.

Laporta said the third lever would be activated by the sale of a percentage of Barca Studios to cryptocurrency platform, Socios.com.

Third lever to allow player registrations

Speaking at Kounde’s presentation: “An agreement has been reached for the sale of 25 percent of Barca Studios for €100 million. We have authorization from the assembly for 49 percent and we have done 25 percent with Socios.com."

Laporta also confirmed this would allow them to register their new signings: "We understand that we do our homework and therefore we will be able to register the players without problems."

Earlier in the window, Barcelona were trying to sell players in order to improve their financial state, and identified players such as Frenkie de Jong and Memphis Depay that could leave the club.

The Catalan side have been in negotiations with Manchester United over the sale of De Jong, but the agreement hasn’t been finalized due to the situation over the Dutchman’s deferred wage.

Depay, meanwhile, is attracting interest from clubs like Juventus and Tottenham, but no firm offers have been made for the player to move.

Earlier in the summer, Barcelona activated a second economic lever as they sold 25 percent of future revenues to investment firm Sixth Street over a 25-year-period.

While the levers do bring them economic gain in the short run and allow the team to complete signings to remain competitive, in the long-run, it could be harmful if the club aren’t successful on the pitch.
