Chelsea spent nearly €300 million on transfers this summer while three players - Antony, Darwin Nunez and Aurelien Tchouameni - moved for €100m alone. But there was yet more business done after the window slammed shut…

The Turkish Super Lig window closed the day after much of Europe's, while there were some superstars floating around on free transfers who were still aloud to complete moves.

Football Transfers rounds up five of the best of them…

Juan Mata to Galatasaray

Juan Mata led a stream of new arrivals at Galatasaray, with the record Turkish champions also acquiring Mauro Icardi on loan from Paris Saint-Germain.

Mata had been allowed to leave Manchester United on a free transfer after eight and a half years, 51 goals, 47 assists and four major honours at Old Trafford.

"I feel so good; I'm excited and very motivated," he said after signing his potential two-year deal. "I'm grateful to be here. Everyone's very friendly. I can't wait to win with Galatasaray. Everyone told me what a nice atmosphere this place has. I'm can't wait to experience it. I can't wait to fight in front of our fans."

Diego Costa to Wolves

Mata's former Spain international teammate Diego Costa was also on the move, returning to the Premier League after five years away when he signed for Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Most recently with Atletico Mineiro in his native Brazil - Costa was born in the State of Sergipe before playing 24 times for Spain - the striker previously won two Premier League titles with Chelsea.

A ruptured cruciate ligament sustained by Sasa Kalajdzic days after arriving from Stuttgart forced Wolves back into the market.

Miralem Pjanic to Sharjah

Miralem Pjanic had looked to have had a future at Barcelona under Xavi following last season's loan spell with Besiktas; the Bosnia-Herzegovina midfielder convincing his coach in pre-season.

But when Frenkie de Jong decided to stay rather than move to Man Utd, Barca's midfield began to look too busy, and Pjanic - who cost the Catalan giants €65m in June 2020 - was allowed to join Emirati outfit Sharjah on a free.

Loris Karius to Newcastle

Once Liverpool's No.1, Loris Karius was floating around on a free transfer after the conclusion of his contract at Anfield. Long since deposed by Alisson, Karius is nonetheless a Premier League-level goalkeeper whom Newcastle were relieved to sign.

With Karl Darlow injured and Martin Dubravka leaving on loan to Man Utd, Newcastle were left short of cover for Nick Pope. Karius may find himself on the bench for now, but he has been given the No.1 jersey…

Serge Aurier to Nottingham Forest

Only Chelsea spent more money than Nottingham Forest in the recent transfer window, the newly promoted Premier League club signing no fewer than 22 players in their bid to stay in England's top flight for the longer term.

And they weren't finished after deadline day, either, with former PSG and Tottenham Hotspur right-back Serge Aurier arriving on a free, having most recently been with La Liga side Villarreal.

Honourable mentions

Mauro Icardi (PSG to Galatasaray, loan)

Michy Batshuayi (Chelsea to Fenerbahce, loan)

Nathan Redmond (Southampton to Besiktas, free)
