Barcelona given ‘APPROVAL’ for €42m signing – Fabrizio Romano
Barcelona have been given the green light to complete a major signing, according to football transfer news insider Fabrizio Romano.
Frenkie de Jong is close to finally ending his long-running and often controversial saga by committing his future to the Camp Nou side.
The Netherlands international midfielder is ready to sign a new deal with the Blaugrana that will run until the summer of 2029, putting to bed any doubts over his future with Hansi Flick’s outfit.
He will receive a new salary of €12 million for that period, making the full value of his agreement worth €42m.
Romano confirmed on X: “Frenkie de Jong has given his approval to sign his new contract at Barcelona until June 2029.
“The verbal agreement is done on every detail, just waiting on formal steps on both sides.”
De Jong’s deal was due to expire in June 2026, making him one of the most coveted potential free agents for next summer.
De Jong contract controversy finally at an end
It’s been a long path for Barcelona to get to the point of De Jong agreeing to a new deal.
He signed his current contract in 2020, which has proven to be a thorny issue. De Jong made this agreement under the guidance of former president Josep Bartomeu during the Covid-19 crisis, signing a two-year extension on the basis that he would have €18m of his salary deferred and paid over a four-season period.
This led to threats of legal proceedings against De Jong from the current Barcelona administration amid concerns that his deal was the result of financial mismanagement from the previous board.
Ultimately, the midfielder would stand his ground, and nothing would come of the claims, although Barcelona attempted to reduce the salary of the 28-year-old.
Despite these problems raging in the background, De Jong has been a regular under a string of Barcelona coaches, who continue to value the qualities that he brings to the team.
The Dutchman's long-awaited renewal will be cause for celebration for Hansi Flick.
