Man Utd signing still on despite Deadline Day disappointment

Manchester United failed to sign Leicester wonderkid Louis Page on Deadline Day, but this potential transfer is still very much alive.

The final days of the Red Devils' summer transfer window were spent scouring the left-back market for possible cover for Luke Shaw. In the end, however, no signing was made, with the club opting to keep their powder dry.

It is believed that by not needlessly spending on a lesser option, Man Utd feel confident that they can go big on top target Lewis Hall next year, although whether a deal is possible will obviously depend on Newcastle's stance on the England star.

Despite the prioritisation of a left-back acquisition, the closest Man Utd got to signing someone on Deadline Day actually had nothing to do with the defence. Instead, the Old Trafford club chased a deal for Leicester midfielder Page.

The 18-year-old wasn't a new target, but talks over a deal had been dormant for a couple of weeks. They were rekindled shortly before the deadline, but Man Utd failed to find common ground with the Foxes, who allegedly kept raising their asking price.

Leicester reportedly started out demanding a seven-figure sum, but by the end of the window, they were requesting north of €10 million for the England youth international - plus potential bonuses.

Man Utd refused to play ball and gave up on signing Page. The fact that Leicester and the versatile midfielder played Plymouth that same day also complicated the matter, although it was hardly a dealbreaker.

Indeed, according to Ben Jacobs, even if an agreement had been struck, Page would likely have remained at Leicester for the season anyway. This is also why Man Utd are content to revisit this transfer in the future - they got buy-in from the player and are confident of signing him next year.

"My information is kind of that Man Utd were comfortable signing him and either pre-agreeing or loaning straight back to Leicester," Jacobs explained on The United Stand. "So we weren’t to read too much into him playing against Plymouth, but there was a gulf in valuation.

"They could well continue these negotiations in the next few days with still a view to a pre-agreement. Louis Page to Man Utd is not dead, and even if they pre-agree it outside of the window, it won’t change that much because I suspect he was always going to stay at Leicester this season anyway."
