Manchester United have been handed an unexpected boost in their bid to sign Lewis Hall next year, despite the fact he is in talks to sign a new contract at Newcastle United.

The England defender is seen as Man Utd’s top left-back target, amid their pursuit of a player capable of challenging Luke Shaw for a starting berth, and they are likely to chase a deal next year after failing to convince Newcastle to sell before Deadline Day.

Reports suggest that Hall could be set to sign a contract extension at St James’ Park despite Man Utd’s well-documented interest and The i Paper have confirmed that talks are underway, with the Magpies optimistic that an agreement will be struck.

However, Newcastle sporting director Ross Wilson has confirmed that his side will continue to adopt their player trading model next year, hinting that Hall could potentially be sold if a suitable offer is received.

“Going into this transfer window, we had to do a deal like Anthony Gordon. It might have been another player, but it had to be a deal like that. Now we’re very clear that we’re in a positive place,” Wilson told The i Paper.

“If you don’t trade players, you will get stuck. If you want to be a successful club in the Premier League, you have to do it. We hope [these players are] with us on our journey to 2030, but we’ve got a player trading model as well.

“Of course we want to have players here who are on a journey with us, but equally if some of those players’ journeys go at rapid speed, they might go somewhere else. But of course that’s normal, that’s part of football.”

When asked directly about Hall’s future, Wilson added: “It’s not helpful to speculate on these things.”

Why do Man Utd want to sign Lewis Hall?

Hall has established himself as one of the best left-backs in the Premier League since joining Newcastle on a permanent deal from Chelsea, and he proved his credentials with an outstanding performance versus Barcelona in the Champions League last season.

He is seen as the perfect long-term replacement for the aforementioned Shaw, and with Man Utd set to bolster their defence in 2027, having addressed their attack and midfield in back-to-back summers, they are expected to seriously pursue a deal when the current campaign concludes.

It has previously been reported that Hall would be open to an Old Trafford switch, although Newcastle were reluctant to sanction a sale over the summer and it remains to be seen if their stance will change next year.
