Surprise Liverpool transfer decision saves 134-year record

Liverpool look set to preserve a 134-year record this summer, and they have academy prospect Jayden Danns to thank.

There have been seismic changes at Liverpool over the past 12 months. Last year, the Reds looked to evolve beyond the team that then-head coach Arne Slot had inherited from Jurgen Klopp and made numerous signings while long-serving players departed - a trend that has continued this summer.

One of the most painful departures for supporters was that of Trent Alexander-Arnold. Not only was he one of the club's most important and unique players, but he was also the most high-profile Scouser in the team.

With Trent having controversially joined Real Madrid in 2025, Curtis Jones took on that mantle last season, but the midfielder has now also departed, linking up with Inter after a months-long saga.

This left Liverpool at serious risk of not having a local boy in the first team for the first time in a long time. In fact, the Reds have had a Liverpool-born player in their squad every season since the club's founding 134 years ago.

Danns saves Liverpool's record

Breaking with this tradition would have been hugely disappointing for supporters, but thankfully, it looks as though it won't come to this. According to The Telegraph, young striker Jayden Danns has opted to stay put this summer.

The 20-year-old has fielded interest from various clubs around Europe, but he has now rebuffed all loan approaches in order to remain with his hometown club this season.

This means that Liverpool's 134-year record will be preserved for at least another campaign. Despite this, it is unlikely that Danns will have much of an impact for the Reds.

He hasn't made a competitive senior appearance for the club in a year, when he made a 15-minute cameo in Liverpool's Carabao Cup win over Southampton, which was overshadowed by Giovanni Leoni's ACL injury.

All told, Danns has made just 10 first-team appearances for the Anfield outfit. All of his three goals have come in the FA Cup, with the 20-year-old bagging a brace against Southampton in 2024 and scoring against Accrington in 2025.

After his goal against Accrington, he joined Sunderland on loan for the second half of the 2024/25 season, but he did not play a single game for the Black Cats as they won promotion.
