Liverpool 'offered' chance to fix Iraola's biggest problem with shock signing

Liverpool and Manchester City have reportedly been offered the chance to sign Daniel Carvajal, who is now available on a free transfer following his Real Madrid exit earlier this year.

The former Spain international has been a free agent since his contract at the Bernabeu expired in July, and intermediaries have now stepped up transfer talks as they look to find a suitable destination for the 34-year-old.

Carvajal, who spent 13 years at Real Madrid before his exit, has held talks with several clubs in Spain over recent weeks, while clubs in the MLS and the Saudi Pro League have also expressed their interest in signing him.

However, he is yet to finalise an agreement and Liverpool and Man City have been offered the chance to sign him, as per a report from TEAMtalk.

It’s claimed that Fulham could also swoop for the Spaniard, with Alvaro Arbeloa interested in luring his compatriot to Craven Cottage after bringing in Gonzalo Garcia, Cesar Palacios and Manuel Angel from Real Madrid over the summer.

Neither Liverpool or Man City have formally approached Carvajal over a potential deal, although it’s reported that talks could take place shortly following input from intermediaries.

Do Liverpool need Dani Carvajal?

Despite Conor Bradley’s absence through injury and Jeremie Frimpong’s unconvincing form at right-back, Andoni Iraola may have already found a solution without needing to bring Carvajal to the club.

Against Ipswich Town on Friday night, Ronald Araujo was selected at right-back and he produced an impressive display during a comfortable 2-0 win for the Reds.

The Uruguay international wasn’t spectacular, but he was a solid presence next to fellow summer signing Jeremy Jacquet and the pair helped Liverpool restrict Ipswich’s threat down their left flank, which looked like an area that could bring joy before the match.

Araujo was signed on an initial loan deal from Barcelona to provide cover at both right-back and centre-back, but he could soon establish himself as Iraola’s preferred option for the former, especially if Jacquet continues to impress next to Virgil van Dijk at the heart of defence.

As for Carvajal, he is now 34 years old and while he is available on a Bosman deal, his lofty wage expectations could prove to be problematic for Liverpool.
