Chelsea are already worried about their most ambitious summer deal

Chelsea conducted themselves immensely in the transfer market during the 2026 summer window, with a host of eye-catching signings arriving at Stamford Bridge.

BlueCo finally abandoned their policy of only signing talented youngsters and, as a result, the west London giants now look primed to challenge Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool for the Premier League title this season.

The likes of Morgan Rogers and Maxence Lacroix have already impressed following their arrivals from Aston Villa and Crystal Palace, while the signing of Emiliano Martinez could prove crucial after Robert Sanchez’s underwhelming three-year stint as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper.

In addition, Chelsea earned a British transfer record fee thanks to the €145 million sale of Enzo Fernandez, and they also offloaded the likes of Marc Cucurella, Andrey Santos, Nicolas Jackson and Liam Delap for eye-catching fees.

Arguably their most ambitious deal of the entire summer, however, was their decision to send Jesse Derry on loan to Portuguese giants Sporting CP.

The 19-year-old enjoyed an excellent debut season in Chelsea’s youth ranks last term and amid the club’s decision to prioritise loan deals for their academy starlets, he was sent to Sporting, despite the fact he likely would’ve received more game time in the Championship.

It was seen as a bold move at the time and while he caught the eye during pre-season, Derry has now faded into the background at Sporting, and it’s beginning to become a concern.

Jesse Derry loan fears

The entire season behind Chelsea’s decision to send Derry out on loan was to ensure he received consistent game time at first-team level in order to improve his development as they look to eventually promote him to a senior role at Stamford Bridge.

However, he is yet to start a league game for Sporting so far this season, racking up just 29 minutes of action across their five fixtures.

Derry has already been an unused substitute on two occasions this term and the unexpected form of academy graduate Falvio Goncalves has severely limited his opportunities to impress.

Goncalves has scored three goals and provided one assist in five league starts since the beginning of the 2026-27 season, and while Chelsea could never have predicted his immediate rise to prominence, the 19-year-old’s form is stopping Derry from making his mark in Lisbon.

There are no reports indicating that Derry’s loan deal at Sporting includes a January break clause, so Chelsea could be forced to watch him sit on the substitutes bench for the entire campaign if nothing changes and while the club have more pressing matters to keep an eye on, that will be a major concern for the Blues hierarchy.

The England youth international is an extremely exciting winger and his performances at academy level last year prove that he is more than ready for the step up to senior football. But, while Shumaira Mheuka is already a favourite after just two cameo appearances at Celtic, Derry has a long way to go if he is to cement himself as a regular at Sporting.
