Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez has risked further upset of the club’s fans after posting a video mocking England following Argentina’s 2-1 World Cup semi-final victory over the Three Lions.

Enzo has cut a controversial figure for much of 2026, doing little to suggest that he wants to remain in London in the long term. He indicated that Madrid is his favourite city in the world and has dropped several hints he wishes to leave via agent Javier Pastore, angering his club to such an extent that he was even internally banned for one game.

His decision to post an image on his Instagram stories of himself and Lionel Messi laughing deliriously on his Instagram page with the English anthem ‘Wonderwall’ playing in the background has, therefore, been taken as an attempt at trolling against the nation in which he lives.

The Chelsea midfielder subsequently deleted the picture, which provoked fury among the club’s supporters on social media.

Enzo’s cause has not been helped by the Blues’ social media team. Following his equaliser against England, which the midfielder celebrated vociferously, an image of him was uploaded to the Londoners’ socials with a firework emoji in a move that fans saw as celebrating a goal against their country. Chelsea also deleted the image.

Enzo forced to apologise in Argentina over partner’s comments

But the situation is more complicated than it appears. Enzo has also been forced to explain to the Argentine media as to why his partner Valentina Cervantes will not allow their son, 2, to bounce during the popular chant of: ‘Whoever does not jump is an Englishman’.

It has been a source of controversy in Argentina, prompting the Chelsea star to tell the media after the win over England:

“Nothing was ill-intentioned. My family and I have a lot of respect for the English, especially my wife. Everyone who cleans and cooks at our house in London is English, and we really love them.

“The only thing we wanted to do today was win, reach the final and honour all Argentinians.”

Alonso wants Enzo Fernandez at Chelsea

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has confirmed that he wants to keep Enzo Fernandez at the club this summer following rumours that he could be sold for a fee of €140 million.

However, Alonso has revealed that he has held talks with Fernandez ahead of the 25-year-old’s return to Chelsea after the World Cup.

“Yes, we have spoken but as you can understand what we have spoken remains private,” Alonso told reporters during his first press conference as Chelsea manager on Monday.

When pressed on whether he wants to keep Fernandez at the club, Alonso simply replied: “Yes.”
