Bruno Guimaraes-to-Arsenal remains ON as official move finally made

Arsenal have officially opened talks with Newcastle United over a move for Bruno Guimaraes, according to The Times.

The news comes after The Athletic reported in June that Arsenal had a verbal offer - via intermediaries - turned down by Newcastle.

Arsenal intimated to Guimaraes’ representatives they would be willing to pay around €70million (£60m) to sign him, according to The Athletic.

However, the same publication understood there was no direct contact between Arenal and Newcastle, who rebuffed the offer.

But now The Times claims Arsenal have opened formal club-to-club discussions with Newcastle in a fresh attempt to sign Guimaraes.

BBC Sport reported in July that the 28-year-old, who has two years left on his contract with Newcastle, has asked to leave the club.

The same outlet understands Newcastle are unwilling to sell Guimaraes, however.

Eddie Howe's side have already sold Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali to Barcelona and Tottenham Hotspur respectively, and do not want to lose another key player.

Guimaraes has developed a reputation as one of the best midfielders in the Premier League since joining Newcastle from Lyon in January 2022.

He has scored 31 goals in 195 appearances for the Magpies and helped them win their first domestic trophy for 70 years with victory over Liverpool in the 2025 Carabao Cup final.

Guimaraes, who represented Brazil at this summer’s World Cup, turns 29 in November - something BBC Sport claims will affect Arsenal’s valuation.

Arsenal have also been linked with Lille and Morocco talent Ayyoub Bouaddi but The Athletic understands Manchester City are pushing hard to sign the 18-year-old, whose value may have risen to €100m (£85m) following Tonali and Elliot Anderson’s summer transfers.

Tonali left Newcastle for Spurs in a deal worth €117m (£100m) including add-ons, while Man City signed Anderson from Nottingham Forest for €136m (£116m).
