Barcola has emerged as Liverpool’s top target this summer to replace the departed Mohamed Salah and Andoni Iraola’s side are believed to be the frontrunners for the 23-year-old ahead of rivals Arsenal.

Reports emerged last week that Barcola would not extend his contract, which is due to expire in 2028, leading PSG to place a price tag of €170 million on the Frenchman if they are to sell him this summer.

While Liverpool are said to be ‘far’ from reaching an agreement over a fee with PSG, L’Equipe report that Barcola has been in contact with Iraola to give his ‘verbal agreement’ to join the Reds.

However, it is also stressed this does not constitute a contractual agreement between the player and Liverpool, with Barcola merely giving his priority to the English club if a deal can be reached with PSG.

PSG are said to be remaining firm on their price, particularly after missing out on signing Yan Diomande, and a gap in valuation with Liverpool is so far described as ‘significant’.

Liverpool have had a long-standing interest in Barcola, with an approach reportedly having been made for him last summer as well, and they could finally get their man this summer as the club search for a new marquee signing in attack.

Arsenal had also been keen on signing Barcola but their attention is believed to have pivoted to a potential deal for Vinicius Junior, giving Liverpool the edge in talks.

However, the situation could be complicated after PSG’s failure to sign Diomande, with the RB Leipzig winger initially deemed as the replacement for Barcola, only for him to agree a move to Real Madrid.

PSG could now look to keep Barcola unless they receive an offer close to their €170m valuation, even with the player being unwilling to renew his contract in the long-term.

Liverpool are unlikely to meet PSG’s demands and would prefer a deal closer to €120m and it remains to be seen whether financial demands and personal terms can be struck in the coming weeks.
