Nico Jackson threatens to throw away Chelsea career in 22 chaotic minutes
If Nicolas Jackson’s aim is to get a second chance at Chelsea this summer, the striker certainly did not show it during a forgettable cameo for Senegal in a pre-World Cup friendly against Saudi Arabia.
Jackson spent last season out on loan at Bundesliga side Bayern Munich, where he played an effective role as a backup option to Harry Kane, but the 24-year-old will return to Stamford Bridge in the summer.
When he gets back to London, Jackson will find a changed situation. On the plus side, Enzo Maresca, who had no faith in him, has long since been sacked, with Xabi Alonso now in charge. But competition for places is as fierce as ever as Emmanuel Emegha joins Chelsea’s group of strikers, in which Joao Pedro has established himself firmly at the top of the hierarchy.
Nicolas Jackson sent off for two yellows in two minutes
Alonso has been receptive to giving Jackson another shot with the Blues, but opportunities to impress the new manager are set to be precious and the former Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen boss would not have been taken by the performance delivered by Jackson off the bench for Senegal against Saudi Arabia.
He arrived on the field after 62 minutes and passed up a strong chance to break the deadlock in a match that finished scoreless, firing over when well placed in the box. There was also a flash of brilliance when he beat an opponent with a smart ball juggle on the touchline. But the moment that could cost him his future arrived in the closing stages of the match.
Jackson had just been unfortunately booked for a high foot when he tracked back in a bid to win possession back after he had made a loose pass. His challenge was extremely clumsy, with his studs landing on the ankle of the Saudi, resulting in an uncontroversial second yellow card.
He will not be suspended at the World Cup due to this being a friendly, but the repercussions for him could be more serious in the long term.

Nico Jackson’s history of ill-discipline
This lack of discipline was much of the reason that Maresca had initially pushed him out of Chelsea.
In his 81 appearances for the club, he picked up 18 yellow cards and two red cards, the latest of which arrived just four minutes after coming on against Flamengo in the Club World Cup. He would feature for just 30 more minutes under the Italian.
These issues seemed to have been addressed at Bayern. Across 34 appearances, he picked up only three cards.
Any thoughts that Jackson might have shaken this immaturity from his game while in Germany, though, can be cast aside thanks to his sending off while playing with his country.
Discipline is fundamental – Xabi Alonso
Alonso has been willing to give Jackson another chance at Chelsea, but he has also previously spoken of how important it is for players to take responsibility for their actions and of the crucial nature that discipline plays in his approach.
“Defensive solidity and discipline are fundamental and something we've tried to transmit from the start,” he said after his Real Madrid side beat Juventus in the Club World Cup last summer.
While the aggressiveness and the work rate of Jackson are qualities that Alonso will admire, the lack of discipline is a feature of his play that could well outweigh the undoubted good he can bring.
With competition for places so fierce at Stamford Bridge, and red cards already a problem last season, Alonso may well feel that bringing back a firebrand striker like Jackson is simply a step too far.
