€150m bid confirmed: Fabrizio Romano reveals Real Madrid's mystery target
Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Real Madrid will lodge a massive bid for Bayern Munich winger Michael Olise if Florentino Perez is re-elected as president.
The ad hoc Real Madrid election campaign is going into overdrive, with both candidates - incumbent Perez and challenger Enrique Riquelme - making increasingly sweeping promises.
The latter has claimed that he will sign Man City duo Rodri and Erling Haaland and appoint a superstar manager - preferably Jurgen Klopp - but his exaggerated comments have now seen him threatened with legal action by the Premier League giants over the unauthorised use of Haaland's image rights.
Perez, on the other hand, has already acted: an agreement has been reached for Jose Mourinho to return as manager, as confirmed by his current club Benfica, and deals for Ibrahima Konate and Denzel Dumfries have already been wrapped up.
On Thursday evening, Perez made another massive promise. He claimed that, if re-elected, he would place a gigantic €150 million offer for an unnamed Champions League player.
Perez to bid for Olise
When pressed on the identity of the player, the Blancos supremo insisted that the man in question does not currently play in the Premier League. When the name of Olise came up - a player Real Madrid are known admirers of - he said that it would not be him.
And yet, on Friday morning, The Telegraph reported that the player Perez has in mind actually is the France international. Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has now corroborated this information.
The 24-year-old has become one of the most valuable players in the world since his €50m transfer from Crystal Palace to Bayern in 2024. He currently has an Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €170.6m, putting him only behind Lamine Yamal. Perez's bid, therefore, stands little chance of being successful.
And indeed, Bayern bosses, especially honorary president Uli Hoeness, have already made it abundantly clear that Olise is not for sale at any price this summer. Of course, public posturing and actually making a decision when the money is on the table are two different things, but Bayern insist that the winger is going nowhere.
When asked about Olise in April, board member Karl-Heinz Rummenigge shared an anecdote from 2009, when Chelsea offered a world-record fee for Franck Ribery. After much deliberation, he and Hoeness turned down the bid and vowed never to sell players the club deems irreplaceable. That unwritten rule is still in force now.
"We discussed it for two hours, trying to figure out what to do with it. That day, we made a fundamental decision: that in the future, we would never sell a player we would miss on the pitch," Rummenigge explained.
"And this unwritten rule still applies today. For a player like Olise, there's no price tag that would make us flinch."
It remains to be seen if Bayern's resolve is truly as strong as the club suggests. It also remains to be seen whether Perez will indeed win re-election and actually make that bid. A lot is up in the air right now, but Real Madrid are clearly ready to break the market this summer.
