Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has announced that the club will make a record-breaking €150 million bid for a mystery player next week should he be re-elected to his post at the weekend.

Faced with pressure applied by rival Enrique Riquelme, who has promised that both Erling Haaland and Rodri will move to Real Madrid should he upset the odds and be elected the new president on Sunday, Perez has responded with two major announcements.

Firstly, Los Blancos can break their transfer record next week, when they will make a €150m offer for an as yet unnamed player, and secondly, that a deal to bring Denzel Dumfries to the club from Inter Milan has already been finalised.

Florentino Perez announces Galactico signing

Perez told ‘Horizonte’ (via Marca): “I have some news to share. On Tuesday, I'm going to make a significant offer to a Champions League club for a top player. It would be the largest transfer fee Real Madrid has ever paid. It would be around €150 million. A hint? I can't give you any, I'm just hinting at what we're going to do.

“Olise is a great player, but he's not Olise. He's not Doku either … We're going to make a significant offer, at least €150m. Ideally, he'd be a midfielder or forward. And he's not Erling Haaland. And he's not from the Premier League. And the first thing we'll do is talk to the club. It's a signing meant to generate excitement, because that's what it's all about, generating excitement.”

Perez also described the player as being young and described him as a ‘Galactico’, adding: “You remember I brought Luis Figo, David Beckham, Ronaldo, Kaka. This kid of top, top name. It’s that level of player. The excitement will be crazy.

“This is just a starting bid. It could go up.”

Who is Real Madrid’s mystery signing?

There are only a handful of players who fit the description that Perez offered, particularly when Barcelona will not allow the likes of Lamine Yamal or Pedri to depart the club for their great rivals.

Indeed, the Real Madrid president’s words indicate that a raid on European champions PSG must be their goal, with the likes of Vitinha, Desire Doue, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Joao Neves the type of players who must be in their sights.

There is also the possibility that they are looking at a shock deal with Bayern Munich, where Jamal Musiala would meet the description of player that Romano described. Atletico Madrid’s Julian Alvarez could be another superstar Los Blancos are looking at.

The options at PSG look likeliest. In particular, Vitinha and Joao Neves share an agent, Jorge Mendes, with Jose Mourinho, who will become Real Madrid’s next manager if Perez wins the election.

A smart strategic choice

Perez’s approach not to issue a name seems a strategic one in the wake of Riquelme’s promise that Haaland has already agreed to sign for the club.

That prompted an angry reaction from Manchester City, who have threatened legal action against the renewable energy entrepreneur.

"Everyone has denied the Haaland thing, it must be a bluff..." he said on the issue of the Norway international.

By keeping his cards close to his chest, Perez can claim that he’s not unsettled anyone – and it also gives him some flexibility should his record bid, which will arrive on the eve of the World Cup, fail.
