Real Madrid have reached a stunning verbal agreement to sign Marc Cucurella from Chelsea from under the noses of rivals Atletico Madrid, Fabrizio Romano has revealed.

Cucurella’s future has come under much speculation this summer and there was a belief that Chelsea were engaged in talks with Atletico over a potential deal, while Barcelona also maintained an interest in their former academy graduate.

Reports had emerged this weekend that Cucurella believed his time at Stamford Bridge was coming to an end, with Chelsea open to his sale for the right price after missing out on European football for next season.

However, despite the links to Atletico and Barcelona, Real Madrid have swooped in to seal the deal, which will be formally ratified after Cucurella’s participation in the 2026 World Cup, according to Romano.

Posting on X, Romano wrote: “Real Madrid reach verbal agreement to sign Marc Cucurella from Chelsea, HERE WE GO!

“Verbal agreement in place between all parties, player too — he’s the left back wanted by [Jose] Mourinho. Details to follow. Cucurella leaves #CFC and joins Madrid after World Cup.”

The Athletic reporter David Ornstein has also confirmed the fee to be €60 million, with €55m up front and €5m in add-ons, with paperwork and a long-term contract expected to be finalised next week.

Cucurella set for Real Madrid transfer after difficult Chelsea campaign

Cucurella joined Chelsea for €65 million in 2022 and has established himself as a key figure for the club, with the 27-year-old still having three years remaining on his contract.

However, the left-back came under fire during the season after an interview in which he took aim at Chelsea’s owners over the club’s project and also admitted he would be open to leaving this summer.

Cucurella eventually walked back the quotes and revealed that he had spoken to incoming Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso over his future, suggesting he could be open to staying.

The Spain international also spoke last week about him being ‘very happy’ in London and insisted he was not thinking about his future.

“Right now I don’t want to talk about that,’ Cucurella told El Partidazo de COPE. “It’s true that I’m very happy where I am, I’m very happy, my family is very happy.

“Whatever you do, don’t drive me crazy. I don’t like to be burdened with worries. I already have enough with what I have, with my family, without adding more worries.”

Real Madrid are now set to make Cucurella the latest signing under Mourinho after agreeing deals for Ibrahima Konate, Bernardo Silva and Denzel Dumfries.
