Arsenal in talks to sell Mikel Arteta favourite
Arsenal are reportedly in talks to sell Leandro Trossard to Turkish Super Lig side Besiktas this summer, while Aston Villa and Newcastle United are also interested in signing the 31-year-old.
Trossard scored eight goals in 50 appearances for Arsenal last season and although he started the Champions League against Paris Saint-Germain in late May, he is one of several stars who could depart the Emirates Stadium on a permanent deal during the upcoming summer transfer window.
The Belgium forward only has one year remaining on his current deal with the Gunners and they are now in talks with Besiktas, as per a report from Turkish outlet Sporx.
Besiktas failed in their attempt to sign Trossard last summer, but they have rekindled their interest in his signature ahead of this summer and they are now in contact with Arsenal and his representatives over a possible switch.
It’s reported that Aston Villa, Atletico Madrid, Inter Milan, Juventus and Newcastle are also keeping tabs on a potential deal for Trossard this summer, but Besiktas are determined to win the race for his signature and they are expected to lodge a formal offer in the coming days.
Arsenal are exploring a blockbuster move for Aston Villa superstar Morgan Rogers, while they have also been linked with a summer move for Rafael Leao (AC Milan), Bradley Barcola (PSG) and Morgan Gibbs-White (Nottingham Forest).
Trossard could therefore be sold to increase the Gunners’ transfer budget, but the club would be sanctioning the departure of one of Mikel Arteta’s favourite players if the Belgium star leaves on a permanent deal this summer.
Speaking after Trossard’s winner during Arsenal’s 1-0 victory over Fulham back in October, Arteta said: “He has this quality to create these magic moments when the team needs it the most and that intuition and he's in the right place in the right moment and that's a huge quality for the team and a massive weapon for us.
“So, I'm really happy. I think he's been very, very good in recent weeks and now we have a lot of players in a really high emotional state and performance level, which is really good to see.”
Analysis: Should Arsenal sell Leandro Trossard this summer?
Arsenal are expected to undergo a fairly sizable squad overhaul this summer, with the club determined to make a number of high-profile changes as they search for an elusive Champions League trophy.
However, selling Trossard would be a huge mistake and offloading Gabriel Martinelli instead would arguably be a far more sensible idea.
Firstly, the Brazilian is six-and-a-half years younger and would be able to command a far greater transfer fee, while Trossard is perhaps better suited to playing second-fiddle to a marquee left winger signing next season.
Furthermore, the Belgium international has consistently popped up with huge goals for Arsenal, including the crucial winner versus West Ham United in the title run-in last season, and that knack is something the Gunners would sorely miss if he were to be sold.
