Liverpool face fan backlash over Mo Salah ‘dig’
Liverpool fans have expressed frustration at the club over what has been perceived as a “dig” towards Mohamed Salah on the week that he announced his departure from the club in the summer.
Salah will be allowed to leave the Reds without a transfer fee when the season ends, with the Egypt international having sent an emotional message to supporters of the club confirming his departure in a move revealed by FootballTransfers last August.
But Liverpool’s response to Salah has been questioned by supporters after the club published a video in which Jamie Carragher failed to put the 33-year-old in his top Anfield stars of all-time.
‘A PR shambles or a subtle dig’
That Salah was notably down Carragher’s list of legends was flagged by stars.
In an X post that drew more than a million views, supporter John O’Sullivan commented: “This is an absolute PR shambles by the club.
“Salah announces he's leaving, and two days later they feature his biggest critic on the official channel, leaving him out of the top 5 players to play for LFC.
“Due to the timing, it feels like either a PR shambles or a subtle dig at Salah.
“Guarantee Salah not impressed.”
Carragher and Salah: A history of tension
Carragher and Salah have had numerous well-publicised spats in the past.
The most recent exchange between the pair came in late 2025, after Salah had claimed Arne Slot had “thrown him under a bus” after dropping him to the bench. After that outburst, Carragher claimed that the Liverpool legend had tried to do “maximum damage” to the club.
The attacker subsequently admitted that he was “hurt” by Carragher’s criticism and claimed that the Sky Sports pundit would “go for me again and again”.
Carragher’s decision to leave Salah out of his biggest five Liverpool legends has been perceived as the latest dig in the jousting between the pair.
Who did Carragher put above Salah in Liverpool legends list?
Carragher, who played more than 500 Premier League games for the Reds, leaned heavily on the great Liverpool sides of the 1980s for his list, with Kenny Dalglish, Graeme Souness, John Barnes and Ian Rush all ahead of Salah.
However, Steven Gerrard topped the pile for the former England international defender.
Jamie Carragher's Top 10 Liverpool Players of All-Time
| Rank | Name |
|---|---|
| 1 | Steven Gerrard |
| 2 | Kenny Dalglish |
| 3 | Graeme Souness |
| 4 | John Barnes |
| 5 | Ian Rush |
| 6 | Mohamed Salah |
| 7 | Alan Hansen |
| 8 | Virgil van Dijk |
| 9 | Kevin Keegan |
| 10 | Ian Callaghan |
He was quizzed by this selection by Gary Neville on the Stick to Football podcast.
The former Man Utd defender said: “In your greatest Premier League players of all time you put Mo Salah second, but in your all time greatest Liverpool players of all time you put him sixth?”
Carragher replied: “No, the Premier League list was about foreign players. So Thierry Henry first, Mo Salah second.”
To which Neville said: “But he’s the sixth Liverpool player??”
Why did Liverpool publish the video now?
Liverpool, meanwhile, will argue that Carragher’s list had topical importance, despite the apparent slight on Salah by leaving him sixth.
The Reds have a legends exhibition match at Anfield on Saturday, with the defender’s comments used to help publicise the stars of yesteryear.
