Man Utd outcast Jadon Sancho gets green light to complete shock return
Manchester United flop Jadon Sancho is closing in on a second return to Borussia Dortmund, according to German media.
The former England international is spending the season on loan at Aston Villa, but his future beyond the current campaign is shrouded in mystery. The only thing that is clear at this point is that he will leave Man Utd.
Signed in 2021 for a whopping €85 million, Sancho has never been able to live up to his price tag. After years of Man Utd trying to rid themselves of the 25-year-old and his hefty wages, the two parties will finally go their separate ways when his contract expires this summer.
Villa boss Unai Emery has hinted that Sancho could be signed permanently if he continues the encouraging form he showed a few weeks ago. Since that interview, however, the winger's impact has been minimal.
Inevitably, Sancho has also been linked with yet another return to Borussia Dortmund. The former Man City prospect made his name at BVB and briefly rejoined the club for six months in 2024, helping them reach the Champions League final.
Sancho return becoming "increasingly concrete"
The speculation isn't completely baseless. On the contrary, Dortmund are actively exploring this possibility as Julian Brandt and potentially Karim Adeyemi will leave the club after the season.
When the news first emerged, there were doubts over whether Sancho would be a good fit for the Niko Kovac regime, but as FootballTransfers explained, there are plenty of arguments in the player's favour.
According to BILD, Kovac has been won over. While there is an acknowledgement that Sancho's behaviour could cause friction - he was repeatedly late during his two spells at the club - the Dortmund boss is aware of the potential he has.
Kovac has given the green light to this proposed transfer, and Sancho is keen on another return, too. The winger is prepared to halve his reported €15 million-per-season salary in order to rejoin his beloved club.
Sancho is also expected to be a stylistic fit for the new system Dortmund are planning to implement. The club refrained from replacing Jamie Gittens when he joined Chelsea last summer, so Kovac has played a lot without traditional wingers this term.
This is set to change this summer. Everyone at Dortmund is in agreement that a system with a heavy emphasis on wide players needs to be established again, also for financial reasons. After all, it is easier to sell attackers for large fees than defenders.
To that end, more wingers need to be signed this summer, and Sancho could be the first one to walk through the door.
