Arne Slot finds himself under huge pressure at Liverpool as the Reds battle to qualify for the Champions League next season.

Slot enjoyed a spectacular first season in charge at Anfield as he led the Merseyside club to a second Premier League title.

The Dutchman benefited from the framework that Jurgen Klopp had built at Liverpool during that first campaign, and has struggled to transition this term, despite a record spend of £446 million (€470m) last summer.

Arne Slot to be sacked by Liverpool?

Liverpool currently lie fifth in the Premier League, which would likely be enough for a Champions League spot next season, but their alarming form has led to widespread speculation that Slot could lose his job.

The Reds were poor in their last Premier League outing at Anfield as they drew with Tottenham, and while this was backed up by an impressive victory over Galatasaray in the Champions League, another lamentable display against Brighton as they lost 2-1 leaves big doubts over the future of the manager.

This, the Independent claims, is purely coming from outside the club. Internally, Liverpool do not see Slot’s position as being under any threat, but those above him, such as sporting director Richard Hughes, could lose their jobs instead.

“There are no current plans to move on Arne Slot, with the hierarchy believing there are numerous mitigating factors for a disappointing campaign,” it claims.

“The team's inconsistent form and questions over lopsided recruitment have created noise over the football leadership as much as the coach, with numerous sources believing there will be change regardless of what happens.”

Salah’s exit will help Slot

The departure of Mohamed Salah in the summer may actually be a positive for Slot.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the relationship between the pair was never fully repaired after Slot dropped the Egyptian in December. This prompted Salah to claim that Liverpool had broken promises to him and “thrown him under a bus”.

While he has been integrated back into the team, the scars have not fully healed while the veteran’s performance level remains someway off its best.

The manager seems to have been trapped by the situation, with Salah having established himself as undroppable despite scoring a comparatively disappointing five goals in 14 matches since returning from AFCON.

If there has indeed been ongoing tension between the men, as Romano suggests, it will not have

Slot should be helped without this issue hanging over the club, but equally he will expect better luck on the injury front next season if Liverpool do indeed decide to keep him on for another year.
