Mohamed Salah will leave Liverpool in the summer as a bigger Premier League legend than Cristiano Ronaldo – and only trails Arsenal icon Thierry Henry as the division’s leading foreign attacker, according to Jamie Carragher.

Salah announced on Tuesday that he intends to leave Anfield when the season ends, despite having a year left to run on his Anfield deal.

FootballTransfers exclusively revealed in August that this was the 33-year-old’s plan as he is eyed by clubs in the Saudi Pro League.

Salah ahead of Ronaldo in terms of Premier League performance

Salah will leave English football amid a tremendous fanfare after years of outstanding service – and Carragher, a former stalwart of the Liverpool defence, claims that his impact in the Premier League eclipses that of even Ronaldo.

Writing for the Telegraph, he says: “In the pantheon of overseas attacking players to have excelled in England, only Thierry Henry eclipses Salah’s output and consistency. While many will argue the merits of players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Eden Hazard, Gianfranco Zola, Dennis Bergkamp or Eric Cantona, none of them produced the same devastating numbers as consistently, season-after-season, as the Egyptian.

“Ronaldo’s time at Manchester United, both initially and upon his return, was either side of his absolute, Real Madrid-peak years. Salah edges ahead of him when judging strictly on Premier League performance and impact. In an all-time Premier League XI, Salah is an automatic inclusion in the front three alongside Henry and Ronaldo.”

Premier League faces ‘superstar famine’

Carragher has also issued a stark warning for the Premier League in the wake of Salah’s announcement.

“Salah’s imminent Liverpool departure marks not just the end of an extraordinary era for the club. It means the Premier League will soon be deprived of another world-class, generational talent,” he says. “Liverpool’s loss is English football’s loss.

“Following Kevin De Bruyne’s exit from Manchester City just last season, Salah’s Anfield farewell brings down the curtain on another career in this country which has illuminated our stadiums. Until others step up to fill the huge void, we may risk suffering a ‘superstar famine’.”

With Salah departing Liverpool, Carragher argues that his void will take time to fill, not just for the Anfield club, but for the Premier League as a whole, with no sign of a world-leading icon yet emerging to replace the Reds’ Egyptian King.
