Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior is “cooking” at Stamford Bridge and needs just one new signing to make his side unstoppable, according to one popular pundit.

Rosenior has received criticism following the Blues’ 5-2 Champions League loss against PSG on Wednesday, during which the Stamford Bridge side were slammed for their approach as well as their naivety in the closing stages of the match.

In particular, the manager has fielded criticism over his decision to start Filip Jorgensen ahead of Robert Sanchez in goal, with the Dane culpable for an error that allowed Vitinha to put the home side 2-1 up.

‘Rosenior has got it tactically’

Micah Richards has stepped up to defend the 41-year-old former Strasbourg boss in the wake of this criticism.

Speaking on The Rest Is Football: “I think Rosenior, I think he’s cooking. I think he’s cooking up a storm. I’m telling you now. Honestly, tactically, this guy has got it. I’ve seen everything I need to see.

“The way they build up, mistakes again, but Sanchez, he probably should have played the other night. Jorgensen comes in, but the way they want to build, once they, if, whatever happening in the goalkeeper situation, if they get an unbelievable number one who’s good on the ball, who knows what he wants to do, I’m telling you, Chelsea, the way they played through PSG and the way they could open up teams, want to play through the middle, then they get it wide and then they’ve got runners from the midfield.

“Enzo, fantastic, Neto was brilliant, Joao Pedro’s playing some of the best football of his life. Cole Palmer’s now getting involved like the old Cole Palmer we need to see.”

Rosenior has made a promising start at Chelsea

Rosenior has already overseen 16 matches for Chelsea since taking over at Stamford Bridge in early January.

His record to date has been impressive, with the Englishman recording 10 wins compared to four losses – three of which have been against Arsenal.

And he deserves to be given some grace for the PSG loss. The home side scored five times from 0.9xG, suggesting that Chelsea were unlucky to go down to a loss of such a margin.

Of course, it’s easy with hindsight to say that Rosenior’s decision in that match contributed to the loss, yet Sanchez has also been criticised for his performances between the sticks.

Perhaps he is a little greener than Chelsea fans might wish at this stage of his career, but he’ll learn lessons and it’s too early to write him off.
