Chelsea dealt hammer Fernandez blow: He could leave - but not for Real Madrid
Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez has long been linked with a move to Real Madrid, but a transfer to PSG may be more realistic, according to a reliable source.
The 25-year-old has experienced quite a tumultuous three years since his then-British record €121 million move from Benfica in early 2023. A World Cup winner with Argentina just weeks earlier, Fernandez walked into a complete mess at Stamford Bridge.
He has played under seven different managers (four permanent ones) and found himself in the midst of a racism storm. There have been rumours of unhappiness - stoked by his own father - and he initially struggled to live up to his price tag.
However, it is undeniable that Fernandez has overcome his early difficulties. He is now among the best midfielders in the Premier League and a crucial part of the Chelsea team.
Despite this, there is always the lingering sense that something isn't quite right. Fernandez is incredibly ambitious and wants to challenge for the biggest trophies in football. However, Chelsea have thus far failed to be genuine contenders for the Premier League.
Is Fernandez on his way out?
In recent months, Fernandez has been repeatedly linked with a potential move to Real Madrid. The speculation has been intense and, at times, conflicting.
One day, reports claim that Los Blancos have "given up" on signing the 25-year-old, only for others to state the next day that they are "going all out" for him.
Now, L'Equipe has provided its unique take on the situation. The French outlet previously asserted that Fernandez had been left dumbfounded and disappointed by Enzo Maresca's shock departure on 1 January. He was very close to the Italian.
Though he has continued to be an integral player for Chelsea under Liam Rosenior, the report claims that Fernandez could genuinely ask to leave the West London club this summer.
This nightmare scenario for the Blues is, however, only likely to materialise if they miss out on Champions League qualification. Chelsea are currently fifth in the Premier League table, three points off third but also just four points ahead of seventh.
The French publication adds that if Fernandez were to request a transfer, his destination may not actually be Real Madrid. Instead, he could be on his way to tonight's Champions League opponents, PSG.
The Parisians are long-standing admirers of Fernandez. If he were to become available, PSG would seriously consider a move despite the predicted high costs of the operation, both in terms of his transfer fee as well as his wages.
At present, this is only theoretical, but if Chelsea's inconsistent form persists, Fernandez could really be on his way out.
