Chelsea set to spark 'serious bidding war' for €40m wonderkid after 'concrete' transfer talks
Chelsea could ignite a ‘serious bidding war’ for a wonderkid who is preparing for a big money move to the Premier League this summer, with ‘concrete’ talks already taking place.
The Blues are expected to have a busy summer, as they have done every year since their BlueCo takeover in 2022 and the club are likely to continue their philosophy of investing in the brightest youngsters around Europe.
There have perhaps not been many more impressive talents this season than Said El Mala, who has scored nine times in a breakout debut season for FC Koln and generated significant interest from Premier League sides.
According to Sky Sport Germany, Brighton are understood to be the most ‘serious’ to sign El Mala, having made four offers for him in the last year, although all of their approaches have been rebuffed thus far.
Koln are hopeful that emerging interest from Chelsea and Newcastle will help then secure a ‘big payday’, with the Bundesliga outfit not willing to consider offers below €40 million, which would be a record sale for them.
The player has not made a commitment to any club as yet despite Brighton having the most ‘attractive’ offer and holding ‘several’ rounds of talk, giving Chelsea or another side a chance to swoop in for a potential future star.
Said El Mala: which Premier League side should the wonderkid winger sign for?
Brighton have been pushing to sign El Mala since last summer before the teenager had even made a professional appearance for Koln and the German forward’s family – who represent the player – have opened the door to a move in the upcoming transfer window.
El Mala missed out on a spot in Julian Nagelsmann’s Germany squad this week and he now looks unlikely to feature at this summer’s World Cup despite being one of the most impressive stars in the Bundesliga this season.
A move to the Premier League is considered the most likely outcome but it remains to be seen at what level, given that El Mala has made the majority of his 26 league appearances this season from the bench.
Brighton have a proven track record of being able to develop young stars before selling them to bigger clubs and the presence of German coach Fabian Hurzeler may give El Mala the perfect platform to thrive in the long-term.
Chelsea, meanwhile, have agreed to sign another winger in Geovany Quenda from Sporting this summer, while big signings from last summer in Alejandro Garnacho and Jamie Gittens would likely see El Mala loaned out or play a fringe role for the Blues in the short-term.
Newcastle could provide a happy-medium for El Mala but it remains to be seen whether their interest develops into a formal approach, leaving Brighton in pole position to add yet another elite talent to their roster this summer.
