Every now and then, a young player produces a moment that makes the entire football world sit up and take notice. That’s exactly what happened on Saturday evening when Max Dowman stepped onto the pitch for Arsenal against Everton.

Mikel Arteta didn't simply hand a brief cameo appearance to the 16-year-old superstar in waiting, he instead gave the teenager a pivotal role to play in the closing moments of the match, in which he delivered a performance that made the footballing world take notice.

With the game finely balanced heading into the final stages, Arsenal needed fresh energy and attacking intent. In response, Arteta turned to his bench, ignored Brazil international Gabriel Jesus and introduced Dowman, trusting the academy product to make an impact. And didn't he do that and some.

Max Dowman’s dream night for Arsenal

Dowman quickly injected something into Arsenal’s attack that was lacking from players such as Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli and Noni Madueke, showing confidence on the ball beyond his years and a willingness to run directly at defenders.

He alone helped shift the momentum of the game and played a key role in the move that led to Viktor Gyokeres breaking the deadlock late on.

But the big moment of Dowman’s night was still to come.

Deep into stoppage time, the teenager produced a moment that will be remembered for years.

Picking up the ball with space ahead of him, and Jordan Pickford out of his goal, Dowman drove forward with composure beyond his years before calmly finishing to secure the victory.

In doing so, he became the youngest goalscorer in Premier League history, reaching the milestone at just 16 years and 73 days old. It’s a remarkable achievement for a player still at the very beginning of his professional journey.

Moments like this often provide a glimpse of what a young player might become and for Arsenal fans, the performance felt like the introduction of their new Starboy.

And if this latest display is any indication, Max Dowman’s rise in the game is only just beginning.
