Man Utd fear Antoine Semenyo double repeat ahead of summer transfer window
Manchester United are worried that they could suffer another double blow to rivals Manchester City this summer after losing out in the chase for Antoine Semenyo in January, according to Deadline Day Live.
Semenyo has hit the ground running since joining Man City, scoring five goals with two assists in 10 appearances since his €72 million move from Bournemouth.
Nottingham Forest duo Elliot Anderson and Morgan Gibbs-White are on the Red Devils’ radar for moves in the summer as the club looks to rebuild its midfield with Premier League-proven talent.
Man City are monitoring both players, though, as Bernardo Silva is set to leave as a free agent this summer and both Real Madrid and Barcelona are looking to sign 2024 Ballon d’Or winner Rodri.
Man Utd will want to avoid the embarrassment of losing three transfer targets to their biggest rivals in the space of two transfer windows.
Man City look to derail Man Utd’s long-term midfield plan
Man City have signed midfielders Nico Gonzalez and Tijjani Reijnders within the past two seasons as longtime superstar playmaker Kevin de Bruyne moved to Napoli.
With Rodri, Phil Foden, Mateo Kovacic, and Silva, the club has a strong midfield group on paper, but it appears they want to add depth and competition with Anderson and Gibbs-White, especially with Silva set to depart.
Kovacic has been out since November with an ankle injury and has appeared once in the Premier League all season. That has forced 20-year-old Nico O’Reilly into a prominent role, and he has delivered — he scored both goals in Man City’s recent 2-1 win over Newcastle United in a hybrid left-wing and central midfield role — but he may be a better fit as an inverted left-back.
On the red side of Manchester, Casemiro is set to leave on a free, and Manuel Ugarte has not earned the trust of any of the coaches he has played under since joining for €50 million in 2024.
Man Utd have the more urgent need in the centre of the park, but Man City have more recent trophies, money, and managerial stability.
The outcomes of the battles for Anderson and Gibbs-White will tell the world a lot about Man Utd’s pull in the INEOS era.
