Man City have rotated between Mateus Nunes and Rico Lewis at right-back for the last two seasons, but they are launching a €50m bid for a potential long-term solution.

The Cityzens are targeting Roma standout Wesley, who joined the club for €25m after impressing in two Club World Cup appearances last summer, according to TeamTalk.

While Nunes, a converted central midfielder, has started 21 of Man City’s 26 Premier League matches on the right side of the back four, Guardiola may want to bring in a younger player who is more similar to last summer’s left-back signing, Rayan Ait-Nouri.

Ait-Nouri arrived at Man City last summer after five seasons playing as a left wing-back for Wolves, which preferred to use three centre-backs. Wesley, who is 22 years old, plays in a similar formation at Roma, but he also has experience in a back four with Flamengo in his native Brazil.

Wesley to provide symmetry, potential on Man City’s right flank

Wesley was thrown into the fire at last summer’s Club World Cup.

His first appearance was against Chelsea. He made an error leading to Pedro Neto’s 13th-minute goal, but he found his feet quickly and helped his team to a 3-1 win, playing 82 minutes.

He made four tackles in the match and won the majority of his duels against Neto, a quick, talented winger who is a difficult matchup for most fullbacks.

The mentality to recover from his early mistake likely caught the eye of big clubs.

His second and final Club World Cup outing was in Flamengo’s 4-2 round of 16 defeat to Bayern Munich. Lined up against Kingsley Coman and later Leroy Sane, Wesley was challenged along with the rest of the Flamengo back four, but he still made six tackles and lasted the full 90 minutes in the Miami, Florida heat.

This season at Roma, the 22-year-old has scored three league goals and earned call-ups to the Brazil senior squad in the last two international breaks.
