Several Chelsea Women stars have expressed their dissatisfaction following news of Paul Green’s departure from his role as Head of Women’s Football.

The 49-year-old joined the Blues in 2013 and he helped the club win a total of 19 trophies across all competitions during an illustrious 13-year stint in west London, although it’s understood that his role has changed since a restructuring occurred in 2024.

Green was instrumental in Chelsea’s dominant success in the Women’s Super League since their first title in 2015, with the Blues winning eight of the last 10 league titles, and his exit has been widely slammed by fans online.

In an official statement posted on Chelsea’s website, the club said: “Chelsea Women can confirm that Paul Green has left his role as Head of Women’s Football.

“Paul has spent 13 years at the club, having joined in 2013 during the formative stages of Chelsea Women.

“During that time, he played a significant role in the development and growth of the women’s programme, contributing to the establishment of strong foundations and the evolution of Chelsea Women into one of the leading teams in the domestic and European game.

“His commitment, experience and professionalism have been valued across the club, and his work has helped support a sustained period of success and progress for Chelsea Women during which we won 19 trophies.

“The Club would like to thank Paul for his dedication and service over more than a decade and wishes him well for the future.”

Green’s exit comes just days after news that head coach Sonia Bompastor has signed a new contract valid until 2030 and his departure is the latest in a series of changes made behind the scenes by Chelsea sporting directors Paul Winstanley, Laurence Stewart, Joe Shields, Sam Jewell and Dave Fallows.

In 2024, academy stalwarts Neil Bath and Jim Fraser both departed, despite making Cobham arguably the best academy in world football, and Chelsea have since hired a number of coaches who are closely linked with Shields.

Chelsea Women will now be overseen by directors with no experience of the women’s game, with Winstanley and Stewart taking on a prominent role despite their transfer failures on the men’s side since arriving.

Chelsea Women stars respond to Paul Green’s departure

In response, several Chelsea Women stars have expressed their disappointment at Green’s exit on social media platform Instagram.

Club captain Mille Bright posted: “Absolutely devastated. Over 10 years building this club and all its successes. A true Chelsea legend, you will be missed PG. Thank you for all you have done for the club and on a personal level. A journey to be proud of and one I couldn’t have done without you.”

Sam Kerr added: “Thank you PG for everything! We wouldn’t have all the successes we have had without you. Big, big loss for the club.”

Meanwhile, Erin Cuthbert said: “Offered me my first pro contract and believed in me when not a lot of people did. Thank you PG for everything you have done and all the success you have been a part of.”

Former Chelsea star Fran Kirby, who now plays for Brighton & Hove Albion, shared her thoughts too, posting: “One of the best in business and main reason why the women’s team has been so successful. Good luck PG.”
