Manchester United have officially sacked Ruben Amorim following his post-match comments after their draw against Leeds United on Sunday afternoon.

The Red Devils boss launched a furious rant during his press conference after the 1-1 draw at Elland Road and he has now officially been fired after 14 months at Old Trafford.

Amorim urged every department to “do their job” amid a feud with the Man Utd hierarchy and the club have now decided to part ways with the 40-year-old.

In a club statement posted on the Man Utd website, the Red Devils said: “Ruben Amorim has departed his role as Head Coach of Manchester United.

“Ruben was appointed in November 2024 and led the team to a UEFA Europa League Final in Bilbao in May.

“With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change. This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish.

“The club would like to thank Ruben for his contribution to the club and wishes him well for the future.

“Darren Fletcher will take charge of the team against Burnley on Wednesday.”

Several managers will undoubtedly be linked with the vacant role at Old Trafford following Amorim’s sacking and a number of contenders have already emerged as the favourites for the job.

U18 head coach Darren Fletcher is currently the odds-on favourite to be appointed on a permanent basis by the Man Utd hierarchy, with the former Red Devils midfielder initially hired as an interim.

Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner is also a top candidate for the Man Utd job, as are fellow Premier League coaches Andoni Iraola and Marco Silva.

Man Utd also have a number of out-of-work managers to choose from, including Enzo Maresca, who left Chelsea on New Year’s Day, Michael Carrick, Gareth Southgate, Xavi, Laurent Blanc and former boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
