Man Utd get midfielder transfer update: Club ‘all in’ as bid launched for €50m star
Manchester United’s midfield has been a point of contention among fans and pundits for a while now.
The likes of Casemiro, Manuel Ugarte, and Mason Mount have all arrived for fees of at least €50m since the 2022 summer transfer window, but each has struggled to either stay healthy or perform well consistently.
Part-owner Jim Ratcliffe will hope his team of decision-makers have finally found a solution, as the club are looking into Joao Gomes from Wolves, according to Fabrizio Romano.
“Now, the name to watch is Joao Gomes from Wolves,” Romano said. “He has been on Manchester United’s list for a long time, but never in the top positions. Players like Elliot Anderson and Carlos Baleba are higher in their plans for 2026. Joao Gomes has always been one of the names on the list, but not top three.”
But the Red Devils are not the only team in for Gomes.
Man Utd face competition from Atletico Madrid
Atletico Madrid, who just sold Conor Gallagher to Spurs, are in the market for another midfielder.
Their attention has turned to Gomes, according to Sacha Tavolieri. That piles more pressure on Man Utd to make a decision and get a deal done.
“Atletico Madrid are now considering a move for Joao Gomes because they want a midfielder and they appreciate him a lot.,” Romano said. “They have a good relationship with his agent and there is movement around the player. Napoli are also interested for the summer, but nothing is agreed or advanced. Atletico want to try now if they can convince Wolves.”
Gomes, a 10-time Brazil international, is one of the most productive defensive midfielders in the Premier League with 2.93 tackles won per game and 6.65 duels won per game.
Those numbers square well with Atleti manager Diego Simeone’s physical, defensive style, but it’s also the type of player Man Utd need.
Casemiro and Ugarte were supposed to fill that role for Man Utd when they joined, but neither has done enough to convince the club that they are worthy of being a regular starter.
Gomes, at 24 years old, is Premier League proven and is used to being under pressure on the pitch, playing for the last-placed team that keeps the sixth-lowest percentage of possession.
