'The world revolves around Salah': Egypt teammate speaks over Liverpool star's 'special treatment'
Reports of Mohamed Salah being given ‘special’ treatment by Egypt has been denied by one of his international teammates who took to social media to defend the Liverpool star.
Salah is away at the Africa Cup of Nations with Egypt and marked his side’s first match with a last-minute winner against Zimbabwe, sparing their blushes by dropping points in the opening match against largely inferior opposition.
The 33-year-old is Egypt’s captain and is hoping to make up for having lost two AFCON finals in recent years in order to bring his country their record eighth trophy, under some pressure.
A column from The Athletic had claimed that Salah ‘largely gets what he wants, speaks when he likes, the world rotates around him and everyone accepts it’ while playing for Egypt, which has only increased the expectation of a strong performance.
However, Sam Morsy, who has been capped nine times by Egypt, commented on the article on social media to stand by Salah and dismiss the suggestions over his teammate.
Morsy wrote on Twitter: “I’ve been in many camps with Salah over the years under different managers this has actually never happened. Disgraceful article.”
Egypt treatment 'probably feeds into why Salah can stamp his feet at Liverpool'
The article stated that Salah is ‘afforded the authority to make his own decisions’ in regards to media availability for Egypt due to his status as the country’s biggest star.
A suggestion was also made that the treatment ‘probably feeds into why Salah thinks he can occasionally stamp his feet at Liverpool’ after the forward’s recent bust up with manager Arne Slot.
The expectation was echoed by his coach, Hossam Hassan, who described Salah as ‘one of the best players in the world’ and believes his star man will ‘have a great tournament’.
“Salah’s morale in training is very high, as if he were just starting out with the national team,” said coach Hossam Hassan ahead of the win over Zimbabwe.
“I believe he will have a great tournament with his country. Salah will be among the best players at the tournament, and he will remain an icon and one of the best players in the world.”
All eyes will continue to be on Salah during Egypt’s next game against South Africa on December 26, knowing that this tournament could be the Liverpool star’s last chance to win AFCON unless he chooses to partake in the 2027 edition, assuming his side qualifies.
