Liverpool receive CRUCIAL Mohamed Salah update after AFCON heroics
Liverpool has just received a big boost ahead of the January window.
Star right-winger Mohamed Salah is set to stay at the club in a massive U-turn, according to Sky Sports News’ Kaveh Solhekol.
“I think he will stay at Liverpool in January. Obviously there are still some issues to work out behind the scenes. I think that will happen in the next few weeks,” Solhekol said.
“It looks like he will stay,” Solhekol continued. “It’s good for Liverpool, it’s good for the Premier League if Mo Salah stays.”
Salah hinted that he could depart Liverpool in January after losing his place in Arne Slot's side earlier this month, but the issue was cleared up prior to the Reds' win over Brighton. He is now set to stay.
Good news at the right time
This development arrives right on the heels of the news that record summer signing Alexander Isak is expected to miss an extended period of time after suffering an ankle injury and a fibula fracture against Tottenham Hotspur.
Isak and Salah play different positions, of course, but Liverpool manager Slot will have an easier time fitting Salah and in-form striker Hugo Ekitike into the same lineup than he did when he tried to fit all three of Salah, Ekitike, and Isak into the same team as he did earlier in the season.
Salah has missed five of Liverpool’s 17 Premier League matches so far, but he is still tied for second on the team with four league goals and tied for first with three league assists.
In comparison, Isak and fellow expensive summer arrival Florian Wirtz have two and zero league goals, respectively. They each have one assist.
A fresh start after AFCON
Salah is away on international duty, which may also be a benefit to him and his club.
Spending time with his national team, Egypt, and the African Cup of Nations gets him away from the pressure that comes with playing for Liverpool.
Salah has scored four goals in his last four competitive appearances for his nation, and he is 10 goals shy of tying Hossam Hassan’s record of 68 goals for Egypt. He netted the stoppage-time winner on Monday as Egypt came from 1-0 down to beat Zimbabwe 2-1 in their AFCON opener.
While he is no longer the leader of Liverpool’s attack, he will enjoy having time to fill that role in a high-stakes international tournament before returning to England to fight for his place in the first XI at Anfield.
