Fabrizio Romano CONFIRMS stunning return of Chelsea icon
Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Chelsea icon Thiago Silva is planning to leave Fluminense and return to Europe.
The former Brazil international left Chelsea on a free transfer in 2024 to return to his formative club Fluminense. Silva proved an instant success as he helped the Serie A giants avoid relegation.
Despite his advanced age of 41 and some injury problems, the centre-back remained a vitally important part of the side in 2025. In fact, Silva has been so impressive in Brazil that recent reports emerged out of Italy that AC Milan had begun considering a January transfer.
The Rossoneri want to add experience to their backline in the winter, and Silva is one of the names under consideration, having previously played for the club and won Serie A under head coach Massimiliano Allegri.
When those rumours first appeared, it looked somewhat unlikely that Silva would move back to a top European league simply due to his age. However, transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has now confirmed that this is exactly what the veteran is planning to do.
Silva to return to Europe
According to Romano, Silva will leave Fluminense as a free agent in January, which is surprising given that it was previously believed that his contract runs until the summer.
Silva recently expressed a desire to play for Brazil at the upcoming World Cup in North America, and he clearly believes that a move back to Europe will give him the best chances of making Carlo Ancelotti's squad.
Romano did not reveal if Silva has a particular club in mind he wants to join, but he did confirm that his clear "priority" is a move back across the pond. This is likely as much of a family decision as it is a sporting one.
When Silva moved to Brazil, his son, Isago, stayed behind in England and continued to play in Chelsea's academy, where he was recently rewarded with his first professional contract.
Silva has revealed that he dreams of coaching at Chelsea one day, but for now, it seems that he still feels that he can perform at a good European level. It will be fascinating to see where he ends up.
