Antoine Semenyo 'surprised' by SHOCK Chelsea approach
Bournemouth winger Antoine Semenyo was caught off guard when he was informed of Chelsea's interest, according to a report.
The 25-year-old has become the subject of a huge transfer battle between Premier League clubs. Semenyo is expected to leave Bournemouth in January as clubs can trigger a €74 million release clause in the first 10 days of the window.
On Monday, Sky Sports posited that Semenyo could choose his next club before today, Tuesday, but this ultimately didn't happen because Chelsea threw a spanner in the works.
Earlier on Tuesday, it was revealed that the Blues had made a surprise enquiry for Semenyo despite club sources previously insisting that they would not enter the race for the Ghana international.
According to the Daily Mail, this approach caught Semenyo by surprise and made him postpone his decision. He had spent his day off on Monday mulling over whether to join Man Utd or Man City - until Chelsea came calling.
Semenyo tempted by return home?
The report points out that Semenyo was born in West London and that he has an "affiliation" with Chelsea, which explains why he put off making a decision on a move to Manchester when he heard of the Blues' interest.
That said, it remains unclear at this point if Chelsea are actively trying to sign Semenyo or if their call was simply to get a clear picture of the full conditions of a potential deal. The Blues are well-stocked for wingers, although Jamie Gittens was not involved against Newcastle at the weekend.
The 25-year-old is expected to make his decision imminently. The Manchester clubs are considered the frontrunners for his signature, while Liverpool enquired about him in November without following up on the approach.
One thing is already clear, though: Semenyo is "almost certain" to be on the move when the January window opens. It is now just a question of where he will end up.
