Chelsea summer move 'practically done' as clear message sent
Chelsea have informed Borussia Dortmund that Aaron Anselmino will not be allowed to stay in Germany beyond this season, according to a report.
The Argentine youngster was loaned to the Bundesliga giants in the summer in a bizarre two-for-one deal. Dortmund wanted to sign Carney Chukwuemeka permanently, but Chelsea made it clear that this transfer would only be possible if they also signed Anselmino.
It took the 20-year-old some time to acclimatise to life in Germany. However, in recent weeks, prior to his current injury, he had increasingly impressed with his performances.
In fact, such was his impact that sporting director Sebastian Kehl admitted that he was planning to "pick up the phone" and hold talks with Chelsea over a potential extension of his stay beyond this season.
Unfortunately for Kehl and Dortmund, Chelsea rebuffed the approach on the grounds that they themselves are planning to use Anselmino next season. At least that is according to BILD.
Anselmino to return to Chelsea
Dortmund have "practically given up" on their chances of keeping Anselmino and will have no choice but to allow the centre-back to return to Stamford Bridge. His loan deal does not contain a purchase option.
Anselmino has to date only made one senior appearance for Chelsea - a two-minute cameo at the Club World Cup - but the Blues are clearly planning to keep him around the first team next term.
This perhaps shouldn't come as a major surprise, considering how much of a headache the defence has been for head coach Enzo Maresca this season.
The Italian demanded that a new centre-back be signed in the summer when Levi Colwill suffered an ACL injury, but Chelsea's recruitment department refused to grant him his wish.
They have since paid the price for it, with the backline frequently a weak link in Chelsea's side. Anselmino, although inexperienced and seemingly prone to injury, would have been useful to have around the squad this season.
