Lammens is Amorim's saviour...so why are Man Utd shopping for a goalkeeper?
The arrival of Senne Lammens has proven to be a revelation at Old Trafford yet Manchester United still appear to be in the market for a goalkeeper despite their pressing issues elsewhere.
Ruben Amorim’s side spent more than €250 million on players in the summer but they are still expected to be in the market in the January transfer window, with a midfielder thought to be top of United’s priority list.
However, despite the dramatic improvement in form since Lammens’ introduction to the team, United have still continued to run the mill over goalkeepers, perhaps suggesting they are wary of the 23-year-old being relied on so soon after his big step up.
This week saw rumours linking United to Melker Ellborg, who has suddenly broken into the Malmo first team to much praise after conceding just once in his first seven games, while also saving a penalty in his side’s 1-0 win over Panathinaikos in the Europa Conference League last week in front of United scouts.
Ellborg is one of a number of goalkeepers being monitored by United and they could even bring in another shotstopper in January, even with their tight financial resources.
While Lammens is still expected to remain as United’s number one for the foreseeable future, Amorim is keen to overhaul the club’s goalkeeping department on a whole to ensure it is fit for purpose in the long-run.
Man Utd expecting major goalkeeping restructure next year
United started the season with Altay Bayandir in goal but the Turkish international has not convinced Amorim of his credentials since joining from Fenerbahce for €5m in 2023.
Indeed, the 27-year-old could leave United in the coming months after failing to take his chance in the first team, leaving the club searching for a replacement in the event of his departure.
Andre Onana is still contracted to United and expected to return to Old Trafford once his loan at Trabzonspor expires next summer unless the Red Devils take a significant financial loss to get his wages permanently off the books.
With 39-year-old backup Tom Heaton also expected to retire next year, United will need to sign at least one goalkeeper regardless of Lammens’ form, particularly with Bayindir and Onana both having no long-term future under Amorim.
However, United may look to focus their financial resources on their midfield and instead promote from within, having seen academy youngster Radek Vitek impress on loan at Bristol City this season.
Ultimately much will depend on whether Onana and Bayindir can be sold for acceptable amounts as well as seeing if any replacements are readily available for affordable fees.
Only Lammens is currently assured of a future under Amorim but the Belgian will need to continue his strong form to ensure any goalkeeper brought in does not take his place as United look to assemble a sustainable squad for the future.
