Chelsea’s prayers answered: Barcelona want ‘quick sale’ of ‘best in world’ star
Chelsea have been alerted to Barcelona putting a player they have long tracked on the transfer market before the window opens again in January.
The Blues have been known for their big spending in recent years but are liable to dip back into the transfer market for a centre-back in the mid-season transfer window. The Blues have been rocked by a long-term injury to Levi Colwill while they have otherwise struggled to find consistency at the heart of their defence.
Now Barcelona have made it clear that Ronald Araujo has been placed on the transfer market, with the Camp Nou side seeking a ‘quick sale’ for the player, Sport reports.
Araujo could be available for around €40 million, which lands virtually right on his Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €39.4m.
The Blues had previously held an interest in the player in the summer along with Liverpool, Tottenham and Juventus. All were politely turned down by the 26-year-old, who is under contract at Barcelona until 2031.
Araujo has been with Barcelona since 2018 and was praised heavily by former Barcelona boss Xavi.
“Without the ball, he's one of the best in the world,” the Spain great said.
Flick singles out Araujo
Unfortunately for the Uruguay international, current head coach Hansi Flick does not seem to share the same opinion and hauled him off during the 4-1 loss against Sevilla at the weekend.
Former Liverpool and England defender Jamie Carragher was similarly critical of the player’s performance.
“Every time Barcelona faces an elite opponent, they switch off and that’s costing them dearly. If Barca want to do well, they have to sell him,” he said.
“I like the attitude Araujo brings to matches, but there comes a time when passion isn’t enough. Defending at this level is about decision-making, not just tackling. And that’s where Araujo is lacking, and that ends up hurting his team in decisive moments and matches.”
Despite the criticism, there is still a widespread belief that Araujo can become one of the best centre-backs in the world, and if Chelsea still feel that way, they have the opportunity to sign him in January to plug an important gap in their squad.
