Martin replacement: Rangers shortlist down to three as Mourinho drops out
Rangers' shortlist of potential Russell Martin replacements has been reduced to three favourites following the news that Jose Mourinho is set to take charge of Benfica.
Martin has only been in the job for a few months, but he is already facing the sack after a humiliating start to the season. Rangers have yet to win a game in the Premiership, and they crashed out of the Champions League against Club Brugge in truly embarrassing fashion.
Reports on Martin's future have differed, with some claiming that he retains the backing of the new ownership, while others assert that he only has one game to save his job.
As far as the supporters are concerned, Martin appears to have already lost their faith. When Rangers went down 1-0 to Hearts at the weekend, chants echoed around Ibrox telling the 39-year-old to 'get to f***.'
Patience with the former Southampton head coach is wearing thin, and he is facing an uphill battle to keep his job. It is therefore unsurprising that Rangers are already looking at potential replacements.
Gerrard, Dyche and Rohl eyed by Rangers
According to TEAMtalk, Steven Gerrard, Sean Dyche and Danny Rohl are the favourites for the job following the news that Jose Mourinho, who had also been an ambitious target, is set to return to Benfica after 25 years.
Gerrard previously led Rangers to the Premiership title but has seen his coaching career falter since, with unsuccessful stints at Aston Villa and Al-Ettifaq tarnishing his reputation.
On paper, Dyche would appear to be a good fit stylistically and in terms of his no-nonsense personality. However, the report asserts that the 49ers do not share this view and favour a different approach.
This could pave the way for Rohl to finally get the big job he has been craving since impressing at turmoil-stricken Sheffield Wednesday. He left the struggling Championship side in the summer and was in the frame for the Southampton job before they opted to appoint Will Still instead.
The German's name is said to be 'gaining more and more traction' ahead of Rangers' potentially season-defining clash with Hibs on Saturday. The Rangers Supporters Association has called for Martin to be axed, and this weekend's game could be the straw that breaks the camel's back.
