Manchester United are ready to make a controversial January transfer that could have the effect of angering senior figures in the Old Trafford dressing room.

One of the last deals that Ruben Amorim’s side conducted in the summer was to loan Andre Onana out to Trabzonspor.

It is a deal that not only gets a player the head coach sees as a toxic influence in the dressing room away from the club, but it also solves a situation that many Man Utd stars felt was “nonsense”.

Red Devils players were left frustrated that the club had four senior goalkeepers on their books after Senne Lammens was signed for €21 million to add to Altay Bayindir, Tom Heaton and Onana.

The Manchester Evening News describes the situation as a ‘nonsense’ and adds: “United players felt it would have been a ‘problem’ if Onana had not secured a move following the deadline day signing of keeper Lammens from Royal Antwerp.”

Four goalkeeper problem again?

Amorim has not given up on adding to his goalkeeping ranks in January, according to a report from Fichajes, which claims that the Portuguese is prepared to make a move in January for a new custodian.

The MEN states that the deal for Lammens was fuelled by Amorim’s belief that Onana and Altay Bayindir could cut it at Man Utd had dwindled.

Meanwhile, the Spanish report indicates that Amorim is studying the possibility of signing Emi Martinez from Aston Villa – a player that the Red Devils were heavily linked with in the summer – or Mike Maignan from AC Milan.

Both would represent logical upgrades for United, but would also beg the question why the deals were not done in the summer when both seemed available.

“I’m not ruling out a new challenge in my career,” France goalkeeper Maignan recently said.

Signing either player could prompt a return to the ‘nonsense’ of United having four goalkeepers on their books in a situation that would threaten to destabilise a dressing room that Amorim finally seems to be getting a grip on.

Any deal, then, would seem to hinge on the Red Devils offloading Bayindir.

Saliba has always remained committed to Arsenal but the 24-year-old has previously admitted that trophies are the ‘only thing’ preventing him from being considered one of the best defenders in the world.

With Saliba set to star for France at the World Cup next summer, the centre-back may choose to hold off on making a decision of his future until then and also see how Arsenal’s campaign progresses, which may leave the Gunners sweating knowing that Real are ready to pounce on any uncertainty.
