Former PSG and Barcelona youth Xavi has been linked with a move to Chelsea for several weeks, yet the Stamford Bridge side have been faced with a hijack threat from Tottenham Hotspur.

Although the Blues have agreed personal terms with the player, they have not moved forward with regards to having a bid accepted by Leipzig.

Spurs have taken advantage of their neighbours’ inaction by progressing with a deal.

Romano has announced that Thomas Frank’s side have even had a bid accepted by their Bundesliga counterparts, putting them in a strong position to complete a sensational deal.

“Tottenham agree €60m fee with RB Leipzig for Xavi Simons,” Romano tweeted at nearly 3am UK time, hinting that the talks went deep into the night.

“Official bid accepted. There’s a green light after Tottenham sent a formal bid following the player’s encouragement.

“Spurs want the deal done today [Friday] on the player side and medical in the next hours.

“Here we go, expected soon.”

With an Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €67.5m, Xavi promises to be a bargain purchase for Spurs.

Tottenham close to sensational hijack

Xavi Simons’ move to Tottenham now appears almost a formality, with transfer insider Ben Jacobs having previously reported that talks between the player and club are progressing well.

He reported on Thursday evening: “Personal terms with Simons are being worked on and not far off.

“Simons has already agreed terms with Chelsea, and has wanted a move to Stamford Bridge all summer, but there is no club-to-club agreement yet.”

Romano reports that Tottenham have now made the crucial breakthrough, and if Chelsea want Simons playing at Stamford Bridge next season, they will have to act decisively in the hours ahead.
