Kobbie Mainoo WILL leave Man Utd if these two things happen
Manchester United’s conditions for selling Kobbie Mainoo this summer have been revealed, with the England international attracting strong interest to leave Old Trafford before the transfer deadline.
Mainoo’s future has come under doubt after failing to appear in United’s first two Premier League games of the season, with Ruben Amorim seemingly preferring Casemiro, Bruno Fernandes, Mason Mount and Manuel Ugarte over the youngster.
Having rejected the offer of a new contract earlier this year, Mainoo’s current deal is set to expire in 2027 and, while United have an option to extend it for a further 12 months, they would be open to his departure for the right price as an academy graduate whose sale would count as pure profit for PSR.
However, according to transfer reporter Ben Jacobs, United would not stand in Mainoo’s way if he asked to leave before the end of the month, although they would require a bid in excess of €40 million to sanction his departure.
United are keen to sign a midfielder in the coming days but they would be only feel comfortable in doing so if one of their current options left, with Mainoo the only real candidate to be sold.
The likes of Tottenham and Chelsea have been linked with a move for Mainoo, while FootballTransfers understands that Brighton are also lining up an ambitious approach for the United star if he becomes available.
United in danger of losing 4000 game record
Mainoo’s sale could see United end up with no established academy graduates in their squad this season if Alejandro Garnacho also completes his protracted move to Chelsea in the next week.
The duo’s departure would leave backup goalkeeper Tom Heaton and prospects Harry Amass and Tyler Fredricson as the only remaining academy graduates in Amorim’s squad.
Such a decline in academy representation would represent a significant sacrifice in United’s identity, having named a homegrown player in every matchday squad for since 1937 ¬¬– a run spanning more than 4000 games.
Much will depend on whether the strong interest in Mainoo manifests into formal approaches in the coming days, with the likes of Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid said to be considering loan moves, giving United plenty of food for thought as the transfer window reaches its conclusion.
