Man Utd eye BARGAIN Club World Cup star as Onana replacement
Manchester United’s search for a goalkeeper has led them to a standout performer from the Club World Cup who is available for a bargain fee this summer.
Ruben Amorim is considering adding a goalkeeper to his squad who is capable of competing with Andre Onana to be United’s number one after the Cameroonian's difficult and mistake-filled campaign last season.
United are prioritising the pursuit of a forward such as Bryan Mbeumo and a striker before considering splashing out on a goalkeeper, which has limited their interest in costly options such as Emi Martinez or Marc-Andre Ter Stegen.
However, GOAL report that United have registered an interest in John Victor, the 29-year-old goalkeeper who starred for Botafogo during their recent Club World Cup win over Paris Saint-Germain.
A major factor towards their interest is the presence of an $8 million (€6.8m) release clause in John’s contract and United are said to have made an enquiry for the Brazilian, with a formal offer anticipated after some additional meetings between the club and the player’s representatives.
John is believed to have rejected interest from teams such as Tottenham in January and the goalkeeper extended his contract in order to add the release clause and raise his profile towards a big move during the Club World Cup.
United looking for cost-effective solution to goalkeeping conundrum
United are open to the idea of adding a new goalkeeper to rival Onana, with backup Altay Bayindir a candidate to be sold this summer after the Turkish international failed to convince Amorim of his credentials.
Onana’s departure would also be welcomed to allow United to go big on a replacement but no concrete exit opportunities appear to have manifested for the 29-year-old as of yet this summer.
While United have been offered the chance to sign the likes of Martinez and Ter Stegen, both players would come with significant wages – a costly investment that the club are looking to avoid given their tight constraints.
Cheaper options may prove the most realistic for United although much will depend on outgoings such as Bayindir, as well as the likes of Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Antony, all of whom are set to leave Old Trafford this summer.
