Chelsea are interested in Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, according to French media.

The Blues have got the majority of their summer business done early due to the Club World Cup. However, one signing they did not manage to pull off was that of AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan.

Chelsea viewed the Frenchman as a 'market opportunity,' feeling that they could strike a cut-price deal due to his contract situation. Maignan's deal expires next year, so Chelsea approached Milan to discuss a transfer that would enable the Rossoneri to secure a fee for the 30-year-old.

However, the Serie A giants refused to play ball. Milan rebuffed two low bids from Chelsea, and the Blues ultimately decided to move on. Signing Maignan was not a priority, with Enzo Maresca still keeping the faith in his current goalkeeper options.

Despite this, Chelsea's attempts at signing Maignan clearly illustrated that some at the club feel that there are upgrades out there. For now, though, the Frenchman will stay on the books at Milan.

Chelsea interested in Donnarumma

Chelsea maintain their position that they will only dip into the market for a new goalkeeper if an opportunity arises, and L'Equipe now reports that one such opportunity could be developing at PSG.

The French outlet claims that Gianluigi Donnarumma is not thrilled by the Champions League winners' request for him to take a significant pay cut as part of a new deal.

The Italian's current contract expires next year, and his future has been the subject of intense speculation. Donnarumma and his camp have repeatedly stated that they are open to staying in Paris.

However, as part of their new transfer policy and wage structure, PSG are allegedly asking the 26-year-old to reduce his salary by a whopping two-thirds. Unsurprisingly, talks stalled ahead of the Club World Cup and will be reopened after the final on Sunday.

The report adds that several clubs are keeping tabs on the situation, but Chelsea are the only side actually named. A move for Donnarumma would be interesting considering that the Italian has come in for criticism for his lack of ability on the ball.

Maresca axed the reliable Djordje Petrovic last year precisely because he was deemed not good enough in possession, so Donnarumma could find it challenging to come to grips with his compatriot's style.
