Manchester United may be in the market for a centre forward, but Barcelona are ready to look to Old Trafford to find their long-term replacement for Robert Lewandowski in that same position.

Ruben Amorim’s side have been weak in the No.9 area since the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo to Al-Nassr in December 2022 and are looking for solutions to this problem position themselves this summer.

But Barcelona believe that Man Utd have untapped talent in that area of the pitch and are looking to Marcus Rashford as a potential long-term replacement for Lewandowski. It is a move that could be welcomed by all parties, with the England international having already made it clear that the Blaugrana are his top priority for a move.

“Barcelona are considering a loan move for Marcus Rashford, even though their number one priority is Nico Williams,” football transfer expert Ben Jacobs tweeted.

“Rashford’s clear preference is Barcelona, and he is willing to play in a more central role in Hansi Flick’s system.

“Rashford has no future at Old Trafford under Ruben Amorim, but Man Utd want £40m. Remains to seen whether they sanction a loan.”

Rashford willing to change position

Rashford may be more typically a left winger, but he has featured as a centre forward for Man Utd in the past. Indeed, he has recently spoken of being willing to play through the middle, perhaps in a bid to entice Barcelona into making a move.

“For me as I've got older, the No9 position is becoming more comfortable,” he told XBuyer.

“Things like playing with back to goal is becoming easier for me, you're always in front of the goal and always dangerous.”

While Rashford has shown a willingness to adapt to play at Camp Nou, the indications are that Barca boss Hansi Flick is also willing to sign him to play as a support figure to Lewandowski. The Catalans lacked a natural centre-forward substitute last season, particularly after offloading Vitor Roque on loan to Real Betis.

Sky Sports believe that Rashford’s “wages would be a problem” to completing any deal.
