Fabrizio Romano confirms ‘official’ Man Utd CHANGE in Sir Jim Ratcliffe shakeup

Manchester United are in the process of a major shakeup this summer, with Fabrizio Romano reporting that it has already begun with a major change at Old Trafford.

Romano reports that Jason Wilcox has been promoted to the position of director of football at the club, having led negotiations for transfers during that summer window.

Elsewhere, BBC Sport indicates that Sir Dave Brailsford, a long-time ally of Ratcliffe, is set to take a step backwards at Man Utd, who have made a difficult beginning to the INEOS era.

The Red Devils endured one of their worst campaigns in their whole history during 2024/25, finishing 15th in the Premier League and missing out on European football entirely next term as they were defeated in the Europa League final by Tottenham Hotspur.

In response, there is expected to be a big turnover of playing staff this summer, while backroom issues will equally be addressed.

Romano reports on X: “Jason Wilcox has been officially promoted to Manchester United's director of football as club’s very happy with his work so far.

“Involved in all negotiations this summer, Wilcox is considered key part of the process to help Man United development.”

Man Utd have not yet released a statement to confirm the news.

Brailsford steps back

Brailsford, a previous British Cycling performance director, is set to take a reduced role at Old Trafford as Wilcox takes more responsibility.

The BBC reports: “United believe they have a solid football leadership group in place, led by chief executive Omar Berrada and also including director of recruitment Christopher Vivell, technical director Jason Wilcox and director of football negotiations Matt Hargreaves.”

Man Utd have well over a month to get things right now. While other clubs compete to win the FIFA Club World Cup, the Old Trafford side’s next scheduled match is not until 19 July, when they will face newly promoted Leeds United in a friendly encounter in Stockholm, Sweden.
